Horticulture Leadership Strategy

Project Overview

Key questions to be addressed during this project are;

  • What key factors / trends will impact the horticulture industry requiring new /refreshed leadership capability into 2030+?
  • What are the priority leadership capability areas/gaps and pathways towards industry leadership positions?
  • How can horticulture future proof and create transformative and sustainable leadership into the future?
  • How can the horticulture industry activate and fund leadership initiatives for cross industry benefit and return resulting in future proofing of industry leadership and industry leadership positions?

This Development of the Capability Based Horticulture Leadership Strategy is not a tool for human resource management but a strategy to drive cultural change through non-technical people / leadership focussed activities and investment.

The key project outcome is a practical RoadMap / Framework that can act as a guide for key stakeholders including 37 PIBs and approx. 180 industry groups across Australia as you lead your workplans regarding leadership development and sustainability.

A Project Reference Group will support, guide, co-design and provide industry truthing to ensure maximum outcomes are achieved during /post project.

The project will bring together recognition of previous related investments, touchpoint with industry groups via survey and select industry participants from behind and post for farm gate for input via interview re contextual leadership, challenges specific to horticulture and barriers to leadership uptake.

This project will also generate awareness, interest and appetite for leadership and non-technical skills across the industry.

Key activities will include;

  • Desktop audit of current / previous investments,
  • Grey literature research,
  • Capability needs analysis resulting in a capability matrix and documentation via case study of other industry leadership capability models / frameworks to serve as a benchmark for horticulture.
  • And finally development of the Capability Based Horticulture Leadership Strategy inclusive of suggested leadership development activities.
  • An additional output will be a Leadership Ready Reckoner to assist in working out best investments / initiatives for greatest ROI and make recommendations for funding.
