Capability Based

Horticulture Leadership Strategy

Why This Project's Needed?

Given the fast-paced nature of change, megatrends impacting the horticulture industry as well as ongoing social license and changing consumer demands; the need to create, maintain and sustain adaptive, flexible and transformative leadership is critical.

The hort industry needs a leadership capability strategy to ensure there’s an ongoing bank of people who are willing, competent and confident to identify leadership as a pathway – both behind and beyond the farm gate.

This project provides an opportunity to get on the front foot and see horticulture collectively come together to address leadership skills development by way of a leadership ladder / pathways and by doing so future proof the leadership of the industry 2030+.

There is complexity with large numbers of primary industry bodies and industry groups. Each currently operate at different stages regarding leadership capabilities – what’s happening / what’s needed and hence what the gaps are. A key goal of this project is to solve this through the conduct of a leadership capabilities needs analysis which will see future leadership capabilities for horticulture’s future identified.

A key element of this project must be the generation of interest across the industry for the Capability Based Horticulture Leadership Strategy. Without this, future interest and commitment to activate leadership investments and initiatives will remain adhoc.

A portfolio of programs, opportunities and initiatives will be created as part of a Leadership Investment Ready Reckoner to provide guidance to decision makers as they align leadership development with future leadership functions.

“This project has been funded by Hort Innovation, with matched funding from the Australian Government. Hort Innovation is the grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian horticulture.”
